If your website traffic from Google has dropped while your rankings look fine, AI Overviews are a likely reason. Google now answers many questions with an AI summary at the top of the results, and fewer people scroll down to click. This post explains what the best research says about Google AI Overviews and traffic, which pages lose the most, and the steps I use to keep client sites visible and still getting leads.
How much traffic do AI Overviews take?
The strongest evidence so far comes from a randomized field experiment by Saharsh Agarwal (Indian School of Business) and Ananya Sen (Carnegie Mellon), described on the ISB research page. Using a browser extension with 1,065 US participants and over 68,000 searches in early 2026, they found:
- AI Overviews appeared on about 41% of queries.
- Outbound organic clicks fell by about 40% when an AI Overview appeared.
- Zero-click searches rose by about a third.
- Users were not more satisfied with their search results, and paid ad clicks did not change meaningfully.
In other words, the summary answers the question, the user leaves, and the website that supplied the information gets less credit.
Which pages lose the most traffic
- Simple informational content: definitions, “what is” posts and quick how-tos.
- List posts that repeat common knowledge with nothing original.
- Thin pages written mainly to target a keyword.
Pages that lose less tend to be the ones people still need to visit: service pages, pricing, local business pages, tools, original data, detailed case studies and anything that requires trust before buying.
How to stay visible when Google answers first
1. Aim to be the cited source
AI Overviews link to sources. Pages that answer a question clearly in the first two sentences, then go deeper, are easier for AI systems to quote. Use direct headings that match real questions and keep answers concise before expanding.
2. Publish things AI cannot invent
Original photos, your own pricing ranges, real project results, local knowledge and first-hand testing. If ten sites say the same thing, the AI summary replaces all ten. If only you have the data, you get cited.
3. Strengthen structured data
Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article and FAQ markup help search engines understand who you are and what you offer. I cover this in detail in schema markup for AI search.
4. Make your brand searchable
People who search your brand name click. Reviews, guest posts, podcasts, social profiles and newsletters build branded demand that AI summaries cannot absorb.
5. Convert the visitors you still get
Fewer clicks means each visitor is worth more. A faster site, a clear offer and an easy contact form matter more than ever. Start with your site speed and conversion tracking so you can see what is working.
6. Measure the right things
Track impressions, branded searches, leads and revenue, not just sessions. In Google Search Console, a drop in click-through rate with stable impressions usually points to AI Overviews.
Should you block Google from using your content?
For most businesses, no. Blocking Google’s crawler removes you from search entirely. The better strategy is to make your pages the source worth citing and give visitors a reason to click through, such as a calculator, a checklist download or a free quote.
Quick checklist
- Answer the main question in the first 40 to 60 words.
- Use question-style H2 and H3 headings.
- Add original data, examples or photos to every key page.
- Keep schema markup accurate and complete.
- Watch CTR and impressions together in Search Console.
- Build branded demand outside Google.
FAQ
Do Google AI Overviews reduce website traffic?
Yes. A 2026 randomized study found organic clicks fell by about 40% on searches where an AI Overview appeared.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
Google offers snippet controls such as nosnippet, but they also limit how your page appears in normal results, so use them carefully.
How do I get my website cited in AI Overviews?
Answer questions clearly and early, use structured data, publish original information and build authority with links and brand mentions.
Are AI Overviews bad for local businesses?
Less than for publishers. People still click to call, book or visit, so strong local pages and Google Business Profiles remain valuable.
What metrics show AI Overview impact?
Look for stable or rising impressions with falling click-through rate in Google Search Console, especially on informational queries.
